St. Matthew’s Church

Vestry Meeting Minutes

February 8, 2005

Present:  Rev. Elizabeth Miller, Roger Stiles, David Shepherd, Greg Wehrwein, Kay O’Brien, Tim Sivret, Gloria Anderson, and Adam Fisher

Meeting opened at 7:15 PM with a prayer led by Rev. Miller.

Rev. Miller began the meeting with a discussion of the annual meeting.

Cindy Cunningham, Patti Welch, Don Clement, Melissa Mercier, and Alicia Kellogg have agreed to run for Vestry.

Vestry retreat will be scheduled following election of new members.  Members were encouraged to bring their calendars to the next Vestry meeting.

Vestry minutes read and approved with minor changes.

Treasurer’s Report

Financial statements for the month were distributed.  Hinkley Fund was back-up to 361,000 – a gain of over 19,000 for the quarter.  The bank account currently contains $20,000 and the balance will help the church meet budget demands for the coming year.

Rev. Miller noted that the statement did not reflect the fact that she was paid last month.

Treasurer’s report was accepted.

Junior Warden’s Report

Unfinished business:

  • Paid for a new stop valve for dishwasher and that didn’t resolve the problem.  Dishwasher is looking pretty grubby and the vestry has voted to expend money, if needed, to replace it.
  • Shut-offs for sacristy should be replaced when dishwasher is installed.
  • Floor seam in parish hall needs to be replaced.  Vestry members discussed options for replacing the broken tile in the threshold between new and old additions.

Following considerable discussion a motion was made and accepted for David to have some corrugated aluminum cut for the threshold.

Rector’s Report

Other than the visit from the Bishop and confirmation classes, nothing unusual went on in the last month.  She noted that she had a number of new materials for New Business part of the meeting.

Discernment/Search Committee

Search committee currently has the name of one interested party for the position and a second name may be coming along shortly.  Diocesan website currently has the job posted and it is listed in the deployment ministry newsletter.  Rev. Studdiford will be returning shortly from New York and may have more names at that point.

ECW

Gloria requested Vestry members to assist her following the meeting in setting-up for the dinner tomorrow.

Old Business

Website needs to be developed as soon as possible.  Profile should be added to the site.  It will be very important to have this information up for potential candidates to review.  Adam agreed to follow-up and get work started on the website.

Elizabeth followed-up with Olan Mills regarding a new directory.  They will be here for sittings on Monday and Tuesday the 4th and 5th of April.  Motion was made and seconded to have Elizabeth sign a contract with the company.  Elizabeth will need assistance in signing people up for the sittings.

New Business

  • Rev. Miller handed out a brochure for a steeple jack.  Not needed now, but good for future reference.
  • Youth group left a thank you note for allowing them to visit recently for a weekend retreat.
  • The Hope group sent a thank you note and a check for recent use of meeting space.
  • Rev. Miller asked for volunteers for the Haiti / Maine companion diocese committee.
  • Group that brought forward the recent resolution on the spirituality and the environment would like to connect with members of St. Matthew’s for a presentation.  They wanted to know what format would work best for our congregation.

Departing vestry members were thanked for their many years of service to the parish.  They will be missed.

Elizabeth closed the meeting with a prayer.

Next Meeting

Next vestry meeting will be held on March 8 at 7:00 PM.
