All members of the Parish should be reminded of the Clergy's primary availability as Pastor and counselor. The issues of life often become so complex that it is helpful (if not essential) to have the counsel and advice of a trusted and confidential person. Especially when one faces a tragedy or crisis, the clergy have a primary responsibility for pastoral care. There is nothing a parish priest does that is more important. In most cases, the clergy's general awareness of parish life and needs puts them in touch with this ministry without being asked (I.e., serious illness) but there are times when someone in personal need must seek to initiate the pastoral care and attention of the clergy. In specific matters, where additional care is needed, the clergy know the resources of the whole community and can help with referral. In all cases, the strictest confidentiality is maintained and professional counseling resource of the parish clergy is usually available to all members of the general community. Frequently, a member of the parish can be an important connection between the clergy and someone outside the parish who needs help.
It is an important part of parish ministry for the clergy to make regular home calls on members of the parish, especially newcomers. However, the demands of Parish work, hospital calling, and counseling often reduce our ability to call as often as we would like. Also, the increasing number of folks who work narrows the time for finding them at home. While routine calling will always be a part of our work, we also depend upon your initiative for invitation if there are issues and matters you might like to discuss either at home or in the office. Please never think that the clergy are "too busy" to minister to your needs.
